What a horrible day we had, and all baby related! *sigh*
Ok so we got the carpets cleaned yesterday - and then found out we had to wait nearly all day for them to dry before we could start setting up the nursery. We had to see the in-laws for a while in the evening, so by the time we got home we just weren't up for it. So we decided that seeing as today was Dave's day off, we'd set the nursery up in the morning (expected it to take a few hours at most) and then go out for some fun in the arvo.
So much for the best laid plans.
We had bought 4 pieces of nursery furniture second-hand on Ebay - all white and a light timber colour. The cot wasn't assembled - the other pieces were. So our first piece of business was to assemble the cot. Nice idea - after about an hour and a half of mucking around and swearing, we realised that the previous owners had put it all together incorrectly and several of the parts didn't look safe or didn't fit together correctly. The slide mechanism on the side of the cot didn't work either, so it was going to be near impossible for me to reach in to pick baby up safely without standing on tip-toe and leaning hard against the side rail.
So we decided we should abandon the project and go get a new cot...
Only then it wouldn't match the rest of the stuff, because it's all two-tone and you can't find a cot that looks like that. So we decided we'd just get a white cot...
But then some of the other bits in the room just wouldn't look right - and incidently, the set of drawers (the tallboy actually...) that I have had for years and was going to use for baby, just isn't really big enough and I'd already entertained ideas of getting a new one when I saw something suitable on special.
So to cut a VERY long story short - after trips to four different baby shops, and about half a dozen different ideas on what we should buy, not buy, what colours, what styles etc etc --- all of this, mind you, at 36 weeks pregnant with baby able to come at ANY time ---- we FINALLY decided to get a cot (we already had the mattress), a good set of drawers, and a change table. We got it all in white, and then the only other thing in the room that won't match will be the blanket box but we can paint that white as well.
But I tell you - we rushed around for hours trying to get our heads around what we really need all of a sudden - we thought all these decisions had been made but then we realise so late that we really need to go in a different direction. Gosh we were bummed out most of the day - not to mention how much extra it all cost us!!! We won't mention the amount!!!
But I've come home now and put the other items up for sale on Ebay - so when we sell that set it will help with the cost of the other pieces. The items we got ARE really lovely - and much more versatile, attractive, practical and functional - so we've come out ahead. But still - it wasn't how we wanted to spend today and it was all a bit too much stress for me at this point!!!
The only other downside to all this is that we have to wait two weeks for the items to be delivered, and we'll still have to put the cot and change table together (altho the salesperson assured me it was super easy) --- but let's hope that (a) I am up for setting up my nursery and putting together furniture at 38 weeks pregnant! and (b) the little one doesn't decide to come before then!
Ok enough whinging from me - guess I will have to post all about the baby shower soon but I just had to get that all off my chest! Ah - feels better! Will post pics when everything comes...
